Christ Church Kenilworth / Kenilworth Community Action Network
FOOD PARCEL PROGRAMME

There has been an outpouring of support for the St John’s Love your Neighbour campaign, the Mercy Fund and for our various partner organisations such as Bettaway, U-Turn and PHA  - thank you!

But we’ve prayed, should we be doing more? We believe the answer is Yes – to take care of our needy neighbours within Kenilworth.  We have discovered that there are a number of families, many within walking distance of our church, who are struggling to put food on the table.  The St John’s Food voucher programme is helping meet the needs of many within the Parish and beyond, but it won’t begin to help meet the need of our local community.

In urgent response to the anticipated growing food insecurity within Kenilworth, we have partnered with KCAN (Kenilworth Cape Town Action Network) in the initiation of a food parcel programme

How will the food parcel programme work?
  • Every Wednesday and Saturday mornings specific food items can be dropped at Callow House (the Youth Centre opposite the Church) between 9am and 12noon
  • Food items can also be dropped into the trolley at Kenilworth Centre Woolworths and Woolworth, Main Road Kenilworth.  These will be collected twice a week
  • Parcels will be made up and delivered on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons
  • Parcels will only be given to residents living in Kenilworth. This will not be for the homeless in our area – U-Turn currently have feeding programmes in place
  • KCAN will manage both the assessment and the list of those families requiring help
  • An invitation will be made to local Kenilworth churches to partner with us and KCAN
  • We will assess after two months whether to continue with the programme
  • Di Hewitson will ensure we are following strict hygiene protocols
How can you get involved?
  • Donate food items (refer to the list below). Bring these to Callow House either Wednesday or Saturday mornings between 9am and 12noon (starting Saturday 16th May).  If you cannot drop off during these times we can make another arrangement for drop off or collection  (email taniahass@zsd.co.za If you live in the Kenilworth/Wynberg area, or if you live in Claremont/Rondebosch or beyond email yvonne@cck.org.za)
  • Volunteer your time – Thanks so much we have had a huge response so no more volunteers needed.
  • Spread the word, especially if you are a Kenilworth resident. Keeping this going for two months will require much energy and on-going generosity
  • If you prefer to give a cash donation for the team to purchase the items, email taniahass@zsd.co.za for bank details
